Praire Dog

The Black-tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) lives in the western United States and in Mexico. Prairie dogs are not dogs but in fact grassland squirrels, related to marmots, woodchucks and chipmunks. They eat vegetation, mostly grass, which is 70 - 90% of their diet. Prairie dogs are social animals and live in large colonies called "towns". This particular prairie dog was photographed at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
