| The Gila (pronounced hE-la) Monster (Heloderma suspectum) is the only venomous lizard in the USA. The Gila Monster is smaller than it's cousin the Mexican Beaded Lizard, the only other venomous lizard in the world. This one was out looking for a meal one spring evening while I was hiking in the Catalina foothills, north of Tucson. Gila Monsters are normally docile lizards and are harmless unless you intentional provoke them. While the venom is not fatal, it can be very painful. | ||||
