Hawk Moth Caterpillar

This is a caterpillar of a Hawk or Sphinx Moths (order Lepidoptera) Hawk moths are generally large moths, with streamlined bodies, long narrow fore wings, and smaller hind wings. The adults forage for nectar at night and are able to hover, much like a hummingbird. This caterpillar was photographed on a willow tree in my back yard in Tucson, AZ and when touched would fail it’s head around violently in defense.
